DH Rankings
Rank Team Player Avg. Runs HR RBI SB
1 David Ortiz .332 116 35 117 3
Ortiz is coming off yet another monster season, topping 30 homers, 100 runs, and 100 RBIs for a third straight year. He even added career highs in batting average and (gasp!) stolen bases.
2 Travis Hafner .266 80 24 100 1
Hafner is actually coming off the worst season of his career. Still, he was able to top 100 RBIs for a fourth straight season. He should make it five in 2008.
3 Jim Thome .275 79 35 96 0
Thome is great when healthy, quietly putting up All-Star numbers in 2007. But the problem is that he hasn't been healthy often enough of late. Thome has missed 154 games over the past three seasons, and at age 37, there's a good chance he'll miss more this year.
4 Billy Butler .292 38 8 52 0
The 21-year-old Butler might be the best young hitter in baseball. He had 33 extra-base hits in a little more than half a big league season in 2007, and should continue to get better in '08.
5 Gary Sheffield .265 107 25 75 22
Sheffield still put up big numbers across the board last season. But he suffered a shoulder injury and faded badly late in the year, hitting .203 with just four homers after the All-Star break. Now 39 years old, Sheffield could begin to fade fast.
6 Frank Thomas .277 63 26 95 0
Thomas didn't quite match his monster 2006 season (.270 with 39 homers and 114 RBIs), but he was still solid in '07. Of course, since he'll turn 40 in May, Thomas can't be expected to keep up this pace.
7 Jason Giambi .2363114391
Giambi is coming off one of the worst seasons of his career. But if he stays healthy (for once), he could still hit 25 homers.
8 Jose Vidro .314 78 6 59 0
Unlike most DHs, Vidro's power is pretty much non-existent. But he should hit for a solid batting average again.
9 Shelley Duncan .257 16 7 17 0
Duncan showed big-time power in his first big league stint, hitting seven homers in just 74 at-bats. He's likely to come off the bench for most of this season, but he could see a good amount of playing time if Jason Giambi, Hideki Matsui, or Johnny Damon get hurt again.
