2008 NBA Draft Diary (Cont'd)

The first thing Robin should buy with his rookie contract money is a hat that fits properly.

- The Draft Day Queen is wandering the premises, dressed in what appears to be a discolored prom dress. For a Draft Day Queen, this curious-looking fan doesn't seem to know much about her day. She couldn't identify number four pick Russell Westbrook and she keeps waiting for Mayo to walk by the fan section well beyond the third pick, which was when Mayo was actually selected.

- Of all the family in the green room tonight, Kevin Love's dad, Stan, certainly stands out. Stan was a star at the University of Oregon before going on to play in the NBA for three seasons. "The first person I want to thank is my dad," Love said after being picked. "He is the first person that put the ball in my hands when I was a young kid."

- And with the sixth pick, the New York Knicks select...BOOOOOOOO! Who's BOOO? Oh, right, they took Gallinari, who looks like he'll have some work to do in order to win over the locals.

- Following Gallinari on the walk from the stage through the fans and into the media room was quite a different experience from following Beasley. The local fans still let him have it. Lots of boos and screaming, including one fan who high-fived Gallinari, only to yell "You stink!" as he walked away.

- Not all of the fans were unhappy, though. One optimistic Knicks follower screamed, "Don't hate! He's gonna do it!"

- Let's just say Gallinari wasn't exactly impressed by the Knicks, either. "I don't think they play so well," is how Gallinari succinctly summed up last season for the NY team.

- Apparently, one of the first lessons you learn as an NBA star is to show off your pearly whites. As each new pick enters the media room, he's instructed by an NBA staffer to lift his new cap up high so everyone can see his face.

- It's official, Joe Alexander has the biggest crowd in the stands tonight. When Milwaukee goes on the clock with the eighth pick, his crew chants for the entire five minutes, start to finish. "It reminded me of my freshman year at WV," Alexander said.

- Time for another award: Player closest in size to David Stern goes to D.J. Augustin. According to Augustin, D.J. stands for "Darryl Junior." Junior indeed.

Rest of First Round

- Worst Performance by a Team Hat goes to the Phoenix Suns, who should've ordered an extra, extra large cap for their pick, Robin Lopez. Trying to cram that thing on Lopez's frizzy 'do was like trying to stuff a dog in a bathtub.

- TNT analyst Kenny Smith gets almost as many cheers as the current picks, including a ton of picture and autograph requests. One fan even asks Kenny to throw him an imaginary pass, which the fan proceeds to shoot and then starts screaming "Did you see that? The Jet threw me an assist!"

- First player to walk up to the podium from out of the stands is the French center Alexis Ajinca, when he's taken 20th by the Bobcats. It's always a joy to watch 7-footers emerge to tower above the crowd of average-sized fans.

- You know the draft is dragging on when between the 20th and 21st pick, David Stern wanders out to press row on the floor, looking for someone to talk to. Luckily he only has nine picks left before NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver takes over for him in the second round.

- Poor Darrell Arthur, who had to endure sitting in the green room until the 27th pick. Arthur looked like he was about to chew threw his gum as the ESPN camera crew kept circling him like vultures as the night went on. When Arthur finally was picked by the Trail Blazers, the crowd went nuts, even prompting a round of applause from Stern at the podium.

- The fans even boo when video of Gallinari's name on the big board pops up on the in-house TVs. Now I know what they mean by "If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere."

Second Round

- After the Celtics wrap up the first round to a chorus of boos, here comes Silver for the second round. Not much happens, except for a slew of international players being picked and Memphis's Joey Dorsey popping up from out of the crowd to enjoy their moment in the sun.

- After the 54th overall pick, music plays over the P.A. system and Mark Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy hold hands and do the chain dance together while still sitting at their ESPN desks. Whenever Jeff Van Gundy starts dancing, you know it's time to go. See you next year from the draft.
