Jury rejects protest over Danish 49er sailing gold
QINGDAO, China (AP) -A sailing jury rejected a new Spanish-Italian protest Tuesday against the 49er class gold medal given to Denmark, saying its decision on earlier protests was correct. The Danish team of Jonas Warrer and Martin Kirketerp Ibsen was awarded the gold Monday, after the competition jury rejected protests from silver medalist Spain over the Danes borrowing a boat from the Croatian team when the mast on their own skiff broke just before Sunday's race. The new protest filed by the Spanish and Italian teams complained of errors in that ruling, and pointed out other possible infractions. In a brief statement, the international sailing jury said it "reviewed the entire decision and is satisfied that no error has been made.'' It dismissed the entire protest as invalid. At a news conference Monday, Iker Martinez, who sailed the Spanish boat with Xabier Fernandez, said the late change in boats meant they did not realize they were racing the Danish overall leaders going into the final because they were in a boat marked CRO for Croatia. The jury decision from Monday said the Danes had given adequate notice to the race committee of the boat change, considering the short time they had before the start, and that the change had been approved by racing officials. Warrer and Ibsen, with help from the Croatian duo who did not qualify for the 10-boat medal race, quickly rigged the Croatian boat, allowing the Danes to cross the start line nearly four minutes after the other boats, and seconds before a start deadline that would have left them with a "did not start'' result. Their seventh place in the final assured them of overall victory. If the Danes had been disqualified, Martinez and Fernandez would have gotten the gold, meaning they defended the medal they won in Athens, German brothers Jan-Peter Peckolt and Hannes Peckolt would have moved up to silver, and the Italian team of Pietro Sibello and Gianfranco Sibello would have take bronze. ![]() |
