New protest after Danish 49er sailing gold

QINGDAO, China (AP) -A sailing jury was hearing a new Spanish-Italian protest Tuesday against the 49er class gold medal that was given to Denmark following a committee room battle that delayed the awards ceremony by almost a day.

The Danish team of Jonas Warrer and Martin Kirketerp Ibsen was awarded the gold on Monday, after the competition jury rejected protests from silver medalist Spain over the Danes borrowing a boat from the Croatian team when the mast on their own skiff broke just before Sunday's race.

David Knapman of the international sailing federation ISAF said he did not have details of the new protest, but said it most likely either challenged interpretations of the rules in the jury decision released Monday or protested a new point.

At a news conference Monday, Iker Martinez, who sailed the Spanish boat with Xabier Fernandez, said the late change in boats meant they did not realize they were racing the Danish overall leaders going into the final because they were in a boat marked CRO for Croatia.

The jury decision from Monday said the Danes had given adequate notice to the race committee of the boat change, considering the short time they had before the start, and that the change had been approved by racing officials.

Warrer and Ibsen, with help from the Croatian duo that had not qualify for the 10-boat medal race, quickly rigged the Croatian boat, allowing the Danes to cross the start line nearly four minutes after the other boats, seconds before a start deadline that would have left them with a "did not start'' result. Their seventh place in the final assured them overall victory.

If the Danes are disqualified, Martinez and Fernandez would get the gold, meaning they defended the medal they won in Athens. German brothers Jan-Peter Peckolt and Hannes Peckolt would move up to silver, and the Italian team of Pietro Sibello and Gianfranco Sibello would take bronze.
