Denmark's Warrer and Ibsen win 49er sailing gold
QINGDAO, China (AP) -Denmark's Jonas Warrer and Martin Kirketerp Ibsen are now the official winners of the 49er skiff gold medal in sailing after protests against their winning race delayed the result by nearly a day. A jury's rejection of protests means the Danes get the gold, with silver to Spain's Iker Martinez and Xabier Fernandez, who won the title in Athens fours years ago, and bronze to Germany's Jan-Peter Peckolt and Hannes Peckolt. In Sunday's dramatic medal race in strong winds and rough conditions, the Danes broke their mast just before racing started. They rushed back to port and borrowed the skiff from the Croatian boat, which failed to qualify for the 10-boat medal races, and sailed to overall victory. Protests that were rejected on Monday included one that the Danes had switched boats illegally. ![]() |
