Llaneras leaves cycling on a high

BEIJING (AP) -Since taking gold in the points race in track cycling, Joan Llaneras has been asked constantly if he's reconsidering his decision to retire.

He's not, he insists, even with a second medal round his neck.

The Spaniard took silver in the madison with partner Antonio Tauler on Tuesday, the final day of the track cycling. That made him and Hayden Roulston of New Zealand the only non-British cyclists to win more than one medal in the competition that the British have dominated.

In total, it's a fourth Olympic medal for Llaneras, 39, the most ever won by a Spanish athlete. He surpassed the three taken by gymnast Gervasio Deferr.

"I do admit I was thinking about that,'' Llaneras said. "All of the supporters of Spanish cycling said we had to raise the bar.''

Llaneras announced before the Olympics that this would be his last professional race, and he is firm about that.

"Competing in Spain, lots of the financial support from the authorities tends to come after the performances in the Olympics, so I'm going to be giving up quite a lot of money,'' said Llaneras. "But this is a decision I have taken with the family. It has been carefully thought through and I have no plans to change that decision.

"Perhaps it's best to go out like this. It's a dream to retire at the top, with a very nice taste in your mouth.''

It was a last-gasp silver medal for the Spaniards, who had never competed in a madison together before. They took the medal with the two points they won on the final sprint after 200 laps.

The madison is a relay race over 200 laps where teams seek to lap the field and take part in bonus sprints every 20 laps.

"The tactics for the first half of the race were simply to watch,'' Llaneras said. "The idea was to go flat out in the second half. It turned out well.''
